Welcome to Kaitāia: Heart of Muriwhenua
Kaitāia is the primary urban center, commercial heart, and cultural capital of the Far North District of New Zealand. Located approximately 160 kilometers north of Whangārei, Kaitāia acts as the final major town before reaching the northern tip of the North Island, providing essential services, rich historical experiences, and a welcoming community for residents and travelers alike.
Originally settled centuries ago by the five iwi of Muriwhenua—Te Aupōuri, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Kuri, Ngāi Takoto, and Ngāti Kahu—Kaitāia holds immense cultural significance. The region features early European mission settlements, gum-digging heritage, and deep agricultural roots that continue to sustain the community today.
