The Tailgate Bench Porch Swing
When the tailgate rusted off an old 1972 Chevy pickup truck sitting in his barn, Vern saw an opportunity for a creative woodworking project. He cleaned off the surface rust, repainted the metal tailgate in classic two-tone crimson and white, and welded a heavy steel frame around the back and bottom. He attached heavy iron chains to both sides and suspended the tailgate from the sturdy rafters of his front porch. The unique swing retained the original functional latch and drop-down tailgate feature, making it the most talked-about porch seat in the entire township.
The PVC Pipe Hydroponic Garden
To grow fresh tomatoes and lettuce year-round without dealing with rocky soil and weeds, Lester built a vertical hydroponic growing system along the south wall of his barn using four-inch PVC drain pipes. He drilled two-inch holes along the tops of the pipes, installed a small submersible fountain pump in a fifty-gallon plastic drum, and continuously circulated nutrient-rich water through the plant roots. Tired of thin store-bought campfire grates warping and rusting out after a single season, Hank fabricated a heavy-duty replacement using solid three-quarter-inch steel rebar. He welded thirty rebar rods onto a heavy angle-iron frame, creating a grid that weighed over forty pounds and could easily support heavy cast-iron Dutch ovens without bending. The Old Silo Gazebo Conversion
When an old concrete stave grain silo on his farm lost its upper roof section during a storm, Roy decided against demolishing the historic farm structure. Instead, he removed the top ten feet of damaged concrete, smoothed down the top rim, and installed a custom octagonal wooden roof with cedar shingles. He cut four wide arched doorways into the bottom curved walls and installed built-in circular wooden benches inside, transforming the former agricultural storage unit into a cool, shaded backyard gazebo for family gatherings.
