The Lieutenant and the Map Reading Test
A newly commissioned Second Lieutenant was placed in charge of a platoon during a large-scale field training exercise in the mountains. Eager to demonstrate his leadership skills, he pulled out his tactical map, oriented it toward the sun, and began issuing complex movement orders to his squad leaders. After hiking uphill through thick brush for four hours, the platoon reached the peak of a high ridge, only to find a massive cliff dropping off into a deep lake. The platoon sergeant walked over, looked at the Lieutenant's map, and gently turned it upside down. 'Sir,' the sergeant whispered, 'we were supposed to cross the bridge three miles down in the valley. You've been leading us using the contour lines of the topographic key as our marching trail.'
General Inspection and the Spotless Latrine
A four-star General announced a surprise inspection of an Army infantry battalion base, famous for its strict discipline. The Battalion Commander spent forty-eight hours driving his troops to scrub every surface, polish every floor, and clean every barrack until it shined like a mirror. During the inspection, the General walked into the battalion latrine, wiped his finger along the top of a stall, and found not a single speck of dust. Impressed, he turned to a young private standing guard outside and asked, 'Private, what is the first thing you notice when you enter this pristine facility?' The private snapped a sharp salute and answered, 'Sir! The first thing I notice is that someone put up a wet paint sign three minutes before you walked in!'
The Camouflage Class and the Missing Soldier
An infantry instructor was teaching an advanced field craft and camouflage class out in a dense pine forest. He gave his soldiers ten minutes to scatter across the woods and conceal themselves using natural foliage, mud, and terrain features. After ten minutes, the instructor walked out into the clearing, looked around, and began calling out hiding spots. 'Private Jones, I see your boots behind that oak tree! Corporal Smith, your rifle barrel is sticking out of that bush!' After calling out twenty soldiers, the instructor looked around the empty field and yelled, 'Excellent work to Private Miller! I cannot see you anywhere!' A voice from right behind him whispered, 'Thank you very much, Drill Sergeant! I'm standing behind you carrying your clipboard!'
Tactical Radio Codes and the Pizza Order
During a late-night field exercise, a tired radio operator was handling secure communications for a battalion command post. Suddenly, an encrypted message came over the tactical frequency from a forward observation unit deep in the brush: 'Command, this is Recon Alpha. We have heavy vehicle movement and urgent supply requirements at Grid 44-B, over.' The operator quickly grabbed his manual, decoded the grid coordinates, and radioed back: 'Recon Alpha, clarify supply requirements immediately, over.' The radio crackled again: 'Command, send three large pepperoni pizzas and a bottle of soda, because we've been sitting in this mud hole for twelve hours and the field rations taste like cardboard!' The command post erupted in laughter before the sergeant took the headset.
